INTRO TO MATHEMATICS

What is Mathematics?

Mathematics reveals hidden patterns that help us understand the world around us. Now much more than arithmetic and geometry, mathematics today is a diverse discipline that deals with data, measurements, and observations from science with inference, deduction, and proof and with mathematical models of natural phenomena of human behavior and of social systems. Mathematics can also be defined as the abstract study of topics such as quantity (numbers), structure, space and change.

Mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, finance and the social sciences. Mathematicians also engage in pure mathematics, or mathematics for its own sake, without having any application in mind. There is no clear line separating pure and applied mathematics, and practical applications for what began as pure mathematics are often discovered.
